Black screen problem when recording with Screen Capture software from Windows Media player
Please read our disclaimer before recording any media streams. Otherwise your activity could be considered illegal.
Windows Media Player uses a DirectShow Overlay for faster, smoother playback of the movie.
A video overlay is invisible to many Windows capture programs like SnagIt, because it is handled by a special video hardware.
Such screen capture software will then record only a solid color rectangle (usually black, pink or blue, the so called "overlay key color").
But all is not lost, the overlay use for playback may be sometimes turned off, at least temporarily for recording. Here is how to do this in the Windows Media Player 10, 11:
- Open Windows Media player.
- Select "Tools" -> "Options..." from the menu.
- Click on "Performance" tab.
- Click on "Advanced..." button.
- Uncheck "Use overlays" checkbox in the "Video Acceleration" group.
- Click on "OK" button.
- Click on "OK" button.
If you're recording from a web-browser or Windows Media Player, you must run the web-browser or Windows Media Player after the video setting.
p.s. Note that DVD video has its own overlay settings in the Windows Media Player, but we believe that Screen capture software is not the best way to re-record video from a DVD video disc.
