Some sites prefer to stream video and audio offerings rather than serving them up as downloadable files. This way, many mass media companies provide live internet broadcasts. But streaming is also used by many music sites to maintain control over the distribution of the tunes.
One of the ways of recording video streams is using Screen Capture (Screen Recorder) Software. Audio streams could be saved by the software recording sound played back through your sound card.
But in many cases media stream recording could be done in a better way, not only because of the higher quality of the recording, but sometimes because of the ability to resume download and/or the ability to use multiple threads (which shortens download period significantly because of the full usage of your ISP bandwidth).
This tutorial will show you how to record streaming video and streaming audio (Real Media streams and Windows Media streams).

Required Attention Span: 1 hour
Interface of HD is similar to very popular download managers like FlashGet and Reget, so you need much lesser time if you are aware of these programs. Not only interface of HD is similar, but it has the same functionality or even better.

Before you start you'll need to gather these elements:

• Download manager HiDownload
• US $39.95 registration fee to use full features

• Real Video stream or Windows media stream, like
  • Latest 56k Video at the Voice of America,
  • News 24 at BBC.co.uk

Step Two
Open HiDownload.
Open menu "Options"->"Program options".
Double click "Stream media" and select the bandwidth (the quality of streaming media downloading may depend on a bandwidth).
Double click "Connection" and choose the appropriate one.
You may also wish to change other options, but the majority of users won't need it.

Step Three
Open web browser. Find media streams like mentioned above.
If you use Internet Explorer clicking on such links will automatically start download. Otherwise you should copy the link to the clipboard and Open HiDownload.

Step Four
You will see dialog window in which you can change the name of the file, its location and many other things.
The main option here is "Threads" (the amount of simultaneous threads you want to use to download media stream). Remember that some servers won't allow you to use multiple threads.

Step Five
Click on the "Advanced Tab".
Change the options if necessary. Don't forget to check "MMS (HTTP) Stream Media" checkbox if you download media using MMS protocol (like mms://www.ryecast.ryerson.ca/dmpstreams/convocation2003/spring2003PM/june11/lowbandwidth.wmv).

Step Six
Click OK when ready. Download will start/will not start/will be scheduled depending on the chosen options.

Step Seven
You can download as many files simultaneosly as yuor bandwidth allows. Just repeat the steps 3 to 6 to add a new download.
While downloading you can see the progress for all the files and extended information (Blocks diagram, Information, Thread log) for one file at a time.

Step Eight
If you want to stop download just select the necessary file and hit "Stop". You can resume downloading later on (if site allows) by selecting this file and pressing "Start".
