How to Record Streaming Media: Save Audio and Video Streams as files to hard disk
There are 2 types of Streaming Media: Streaming Audio and Streaming Video.
How to record streaming audio
Streaming audio is very easy to save because any signal produced by your sound card (Internet stream, music, audio from videogames, ...) could be esaily recorded.
Another group of programs allows you to rip broadcast over the Internet (If you're a fan of radio stations that use either Shoutcast or IceCast servers).
See Streaming Audio Recording for more.
Also in many cases you can use Streaming Video Recorders.
How to record streaming video
There are 2 main types of streaming media recording software: download managers like HiDownload and VCR style recorders like
WM Recorder.
Some streaming media recorders can download only Streaming Windows Media, some only Streaming Real Media.
Universal Streaming Media Recorders work with both formats. Anyway there is no Streaming Media Recorder Software working perfectly with every media stream. If you experience problems please try to download the latest version of the software you use or try to use something different. Sometimes free software is not the worst choice.
There are 4 protocols which are used for streaming media: HTTP, RTSP, PNM, and MMS.
RTSP, HTTP, and MMS are used for Streaming Windows Media (Starting with Windows Media Player 9 Series, Windows Media Services 9 Series and Windows Server 2003 RTSP Protocol is now the default protocol for streaming Windows Media).
RTSP, HTTP, and PNM protocols are used for Streaming Real Media.
Some Streaming Media Recorders can automatically rollover to different protocols (if protocol rollover is supported by the server and switched on). So in the majority of cases PNM protocol is not needed.
As for Streaming Windows Media RTSP protocol is supported by few programs like HiDownload and StreamDown. Due to RTSP protocol rollover problem in many cases Streaming Windows Media couldn't be downloaded by old software. So please download the latest versions of Stream Recorders supporting RTSP for Streaming Windows Media before asking a question.
In case of non-recordable streams or DRM protected streams you can use screen video capture software like Mr.Captor and direct audio recording software.
