Real Media format (.RM files)
Real Media is a multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. It is typically used in conjunction with RealVideo and RealAudio and is popular for streaming content over the internet. Typically these streams are in CBR (constant bit rate).
Recently RealNetworks has developed a new container for VBR (variable bit-rate) streams, named RealMedia variable bitrate (.RMVB files)
RealAudio files were originally identified by a filename extension of .RA (for Real Audio). In 1997 RealNetworks also began offering a video format called RealVideo. The combination of the audio and video formats was called RealMedia and used the file extension .RM. However, the latest version of RealProducer, Real's flagship encoder, reverted to using .RA for audio-only files, and began using .RV for video files (with or without audio), and .RMVB for Variable Bit-rate (VBR) video files. The .RAM (Real Audio Metadata) and .SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) file formats are sometimes encountered as links from web pages.

Support of RealMedia is available in a wide variety of multimedia players for different architectures/platforms. Some people who have found the RealNetworks RealPlayer to be too invasive, have created alternative software called Real Alternative. With Real Alternative installed
.RM files can be played by Windows Media Player and any other DirectX-based player. You may install the Real Alternative as the part of a codec pack such as K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.
